How the Reddit Rising screensaver works

A background pipeline reads Reddit's public feed of the posts gaining traction across the whole site right now.

The saver scrolls them up the screen, each showing the post title and the subreddit it came from.

You can point it at rising, hot or new to change which slice of Reddit you watch.

It refreshes every minute so the feed keeps pace with what's climbing.

Reddit, subreddits and what 'rising' means

Reddit is organised into topic communities called subreddits, each with its own subject and rules, and each run by volunteer moderators. Members submit posts and vote on them, and Reddit offers several ways of ordering a feed, including hot, new and rising. A subreddit can be about almost anything, so a stream drawn from across the whole site is a very mixed one.

The rising view is meant to surface posts that are gaining traction at the moment rather than those with the largest all-time total. Reddit does not publish a formula for it, so the safest reading is simply that these are posts picking up attention when the feed was checked. Many will fade, and some will go on to do well.

Each row shows a post title and the subreddit it came from. Titles are shown as the poster wrote them, they are not curated or fact-checked, and the subject matter can be crude, emotional or personal. Treat the feed as a window onto what people are discussing, not as news and not as a reliable measure of popularity.

A worked example

Posts rise from the bottom — a title from r/science, a meme from r/funny, news from r/worldnews — the mix shifting minute by minute as different threads catch fire across Reddit.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is the feed live?
Yes. It comes from Reddit's public data, refreshed every minute by the pipeline, so it tracks what's rising now.
Why does it use a pipeline?
Reddit blocks direct data-centre requests, so a background script reads its public feed and saves a snapshot the saver can load.
Why don't posts show scores?
Reddit's public feed used here provides titles and subreddits but not live vote counts, so those are left off.
Can I change which posts appear?
Yes. Switch between rising, hot and new to watch a different slice of the site.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is a subreddit?
A subreddit is a community on Reddit devoted to one topic, written with an r/ prefix. Each has its own volunteer moderators and rules about what can be posted.
Are rising posts the most popular on Reddit?
No. Rising is about posts gaining attention now, so it highlights newer items rather than the all-time top, and many of them fade away.
Is the content moderated?
Each subreddit is moderated by its own volunteers, but this feed is not curated, so you may see a wide range of tone and subject matter.
