Editorial Policy

Afterglow's explanatory text is written with AI assistance. The live data comes from public sources, not from AI. The newest text was checked against sources by AI agents, not by people, and you can report errors through the contact page.

How AI is used

The explanatory text on screensaver pages (the short description, the “how it works” explanation, the “About” background section, the worked example, tips and FAQs) is written with the help of AI, specifically Claude, made by Anthropic. In October 2026 the background sections and extra FAQs on every screensaver page were written this way, working from each screensaver's description and a sample of its data feed.

What AI does not do

AI does not produce the live figures you see on screen. Those are read from the public sources named on each page (for example NOAA, Crossref, GitHub or a central bank) and drawn by code in your browser. The pictures are drawn by code from that data; they are not AI-generated images.

How accuracy is checked

Automated build checks confirm that every page has the required structure, a unique title and description, working internal links and valid structured data. They do not confirm that every sentence is true.

In October 2026 the background section and added FAQs on every screensaver page were re-checked claim by claim by AI agents working against public sources: the data publisher's own documentation where it could be opened, otherwise standards bodies, official statistics pages, papers and, as a last resort, encyclopaedia entries. Roughly 7,600 claims were examined. About 43% were confirmed as written, about 22% were imprecise or out of date and were reworded, about 1% were wrong and were corrected, and about a third could not be confirmed from a source the agents could open and were removed or stated more generally. Many publishers block automated access, so a claim that is no longer on a page may have been true.

This was an AI check, not a human one, and it covers only the background sections and FAQs added in October 2026. The older description, “how it works” and tips text on each page has not had the same review, and it can occasionally disagree with the newer text. Where we know of a disagreement we are fixing it.
