How the Fear & Greed screensaver works

The saver fetches the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, a 0-to-100 gauge of market sentiment built from volatility, momentum and other signals.

It draws a speedometer dial from red extreme fear at zero, through yellow neutral, to green extreme greed at one hundred.

A needle eases to the current value, with the number and its label shown in the center.

A 30-day sparkline below traces how the mood has swung, and it refreshes every few minutes.

What a sentiment index is and is not

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is published by alternative.me and rates market sentiment on a scale from 0, extreme fear, to 100, extreme greed. The index is an attempt to put a number on market mood, and the publisher calculates it once each day.

It combines several inputs rather than measuring one thing. As listed by the publisher, they are volatility (25%), market momentum and volume (25%), social media (15%), surveys (15%), bitcoin dominance, its share of total crypto market capitalisation (10%), and Google Trends search data (10%). The publisher's page marks the surveys as currently paused and says only the Twitter part of the social media analysis is live, so the effective mix is the publisher's own choice and the index is best seen as a composite opinion.

Be careful with its reading. Because it is calculated daily, it will not follow minute-by-minute swings. It is also specific to crypto assets, and is a different product from the stock market sentiment gauge that other firms publish under a similar name. A sentiment number records how people feel, and it does not predict what prices will do.

A worked example

The needle might sit at 18 · Extreme Fear deep in the red after a sell-off, then creep toward green as confidence returns — the sparkline beneath showing the mood swinging over the past month.

Frequently asked questions

Is the index live?
Yes. It comes from the alternative.me Fear & Greed API and refreshes every few minutes, so the dial reflects the current mood.
What goes into the index?
It blends signals like volatility, market momentum, social media and trends into a single 0-to-100 sentiment score.
Is this investment advice?
No. It's a display of a public sentiment gauge for ambiance, not advice of any kind.
Does it need a key?
No. The alternative.me API is free and key-less; the saver only needs an internet connection.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Is this the same as the CNN Fear & Greed Index?
No. The CNN index is a separate gauge for US stock markets. This one, from alternative.me, covers cryptocurrency markets and uses its own inputs.
How often does the value change?
The publisher calculates it once each day, so the needle moves when a new daily value arrives, not with each price movement.
Does extreme fear mean prices will rise?
No. The index measures sentiment. Some traders treat extremes as contrarian signals, but it is not a prediction and offers no guarantee in either direction.
