The elements behind zodiac compatibility
Western astrology divides the twelve zodiac signs into four elements, each shared by three signs: fire for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, earth for Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, air for Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and water for Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The four elements themselves were identified by the Greek philosopher Empedocles in the fifth century BC, and linking them to the signs became an important development in Hellenistic astrology, recorded in Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos.
Signs are also grouped by modality: cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) and mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), which reflect a sign's place in the seasons. Compatibility lore combines these categories, and traditions differ on which pairings count as harmonious, so a score from element rules is a convention rather than a measurement.
Astrology is regarded as a pseudoscience, with no scientific validity or explanatory power, so these scores are symbolic. Read them as a playful way to explore a long-standing tradition, not as a prediction of how a relationship will turn out.
