How the Sky Chart Wheel screensaver works

The saver computes real heliocentric planet positions from J2000 orbital elements.

Each planet's real geocentric ecliptic longitude places it on the zodiac wheel.

Lines are drawn between planets currently in a real major aspect.

Everything is computed locally — no birth data, no network, no key.

Reading a zodiac wheel as astronomy

The wheel is built on the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun across the sky over a year, which the planets also follow closely because the solar system is nearly flat. Position along that path is measured as ecliptic longitude from zero to 360 degrees, starting at the First Point of Aries, the Sun's location at the March equinox. The zodiac divides this circle into twelve 30-degree signs, so a planet's sign is simply a way of naming its longitude.

Planets are placed as seen from Earth, which explains an effect that surprises newcomers: because Earth overtakes outer planets on its orbit, they occasionally appear to move backwards against the stars for weeks at a time, called retrograde motion. The straight lines in the chart connect planets whose angular separation matches traditional aspects, such as 0 degrees for conjunction, 60 for sextile, 90 for square, 120 for trine and 180 for opposition.

The tropical zodiac used here is tied to the equinox and the seasons, so it no longer lines up with the constellations the signs were named after; Earth's slow axial precession has shifted the two apart over the centuries, by an amount approaching one sign. The chart shows geometry. Whether positions carry any meaning is a separate question this page does not address.

A worked example

Right now, the real Sun sits at its true ecliptic degree in its current sign, and the wheel updates live as the date changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real astronomical chart?
Yes — every planet position is computed from real orbital elements, the same approach used by the Orrery saver.
Does it need my birth details?
No — it charts this exact moment, not a personal birth chart.
Is a key needed?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why do planets sometimes move backwards?
It is an optical effect of perspective. When Earth overtakes a slower outer planet, the planet appears for a time to move backwards against the background stars.
Do the zodiac signs match the constellations?
No longer. Signs are 30-degree sectors measured from the March equinox point, while the constellations they were named after have shifted relative to them through precession.
What is an aspect?
It is a particular angle between two planets as seen from Earth, such as 90 or 120 degrees. The chart draws a line when a pair is close to one of these angles.
