How the Moon Sign Tracker screensaver works

The saver computes the Moon's real geocentric ecliptic longitude right now.

That real longitude determines its current zodiac sign and exact degree.

The saver scans forward to find the real moment the Moon changes sign.

Everything is computed locally — no network, no key.

How a Moon sign is worked out

In astrology the zodiac is a band of twelve equal sectors of thirty degrees each, measured along the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent path across the sky. The Moon’s sign is simply the sector that contains it, measured by its ecliptic longitude. This saver uses the tropical zodiac, whose zero point (0° Aries) is the March equinox, the convention in Western astrology. Sidereal systems, used mainly in Indian astrology, correct for the precession of the equinoxes and sit more than twenty degrees away from the tropical signs.

The Moon moves faster across the sky than any other major body, averaging a little over thirteen degrees a day against the stars. It circles all twelve signs in about 27.3 days, so it spends roughly two and a quarter days in each, though its speed varies because its orbit is not circular. Its position is calculated from lunar theory, using many periodic terms that correct a simple orbit for the pull of the Sun and other perturbations.

The astronomy is precise, but the astrological meaning is a matter of tradition. Practitioners usually associate Moon signs with moods or emotional tone, but scientific testing has not found support for astrology’s predictions about behaviour or events. The position shown is geocentric, as seen from the centre of the Earth. An observer on the surface sees the Moon displaced by up to about a degree, so the moment of a sign change differs slightly depending on where you stand.

A worked example

The Moon moves through roughly one real sign every two and a half days, faster than any other body in the sky.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real position?
Yes — computed from a real simplified lunar ephemeris, not a lookup table.
How often does the Moon change sign?
About every 2.5 real days, since it circles the zodiac in roughly 27.3 days.
Is a key needed?
No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is the difference between tropical and sidereal zodiacs?
The tropical zodiac is fixed to the seasons, starting at the March equinox, while the sidereal one is tied to the stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes the two have drifted apart by more than twenty degrees.
Why does the Moon change sign so quickly?
It orbits Earth in about 27 days, covering a little over thirteen degrees of the zodiac each day, so it spends only around two days in each sign.
Is the Moon sign the same as a sun sign?
No. A sun sign shows where the Sun was at birth and changes about monthly, while the Moon sign follows the Moon and changes every couple of days.
