A short history of the World Cup trophy

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, and the hosts won it. Thirteen nations took part: seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America. Uruguay’s distance from Europe made the trip costly, so few European nations committed until shortly before the tournament. The competition has run every four years since, except 1942 and 1946, when the Second World War forced cancellations.

Eight nations have won the title. Brazil leads with five, Germany and Italy have four each, Argentina has three, France, Spain and Uruguay have two each, and England has one. For a competition with so many entrants, the same few football cultures keep turning up at the end.

The original trophy, later named after FIFA president Jules Rimet, was awarded from 1930 to 1970, and Brazil kept it permanently after a third win in 1970. It was stolen in 1983 and never recovered. The trophy used today was first awarded in 1974; winners hold it only until the post-match celebration ends, then receive a gold-plated replica. The timeline shows champion, host and year, so you can see how often hosts lifted the cup.
