How the NBA Finals came about
The league began in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America, and the first championship series was played in 1947, with the Philadelphia Warriors beating the Chicago Stags. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League before the 1949-50 season to form the National Basketball Association, so the Finals list reaches back before the NBA name existed. The Finals are best-of-seven between the Eastern and Western Conference champions.
Since 1976-77 the champion has received the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, which replaced the Walter A. Brown Trophy. A separate award recognises the most valuable player of the series. It was first given in 1969, is voted by a panel of eleven media members, and since 2009 has carried the name of Bill Russell.
The list tells the story of the league's eras: the Celtics of the 1950s and 60s, the Lakers across several decades, the Bulls of the 1990s. Franchises move and rename, so a champion is shown under the name it carried at the time and the same lineage can appear in more than one city.
