Wimbledon champions in the Open Era

The Championships at Wimbledon have been held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 1877 and are described as the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Professionals were barred until the Open Era began in 1968, which is where this archive starts. Rod Laver won the first Open Era gentlemen’s title.

Roger Federer holds the record of eight gentlemen’s singles titles. The champions listed here come from a wide spread of countries across Europe, North America and Australia, so the list also works as a tour of which nations dominated tennis in each period.

The tournament was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so there is no champion for that year; it was also cancelled for both world wars, though those years fall before the Open Era. The archive covers only the gentlemen’s singles. The ladies’ singles and the doubles events have their own champions, which are not shown here.

Why does the archive begin in 1968?
That is when the Open Era began and professionals could enter the Championships. Earlier champions are outside this archive.
