From a gift in 1892 to the NHL's trophy

The Stanley Cup was commissioned in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor General of Canada, and engraved as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. The Montreal Hockey Club won the first Cup in 1893. Professional teams were first allowed to challenge for it in 1906, and since 1926 no team outside the NHL has played for it; since 1947 the NHL has effectively treated it as its championship trophy.

The Cup is unusual among sports trophies in that players’ names are engraved on its bands. The modern one-piece Cup, introduced in 1958, has a five-band barrel, and roughly every 13 years the top band is retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame and a new blank band is added at the bottom. There are several Cups: the original 1892 bowl is kept in the Hall’s vault in Toronto and was awarded until 1970, the Presentation Cup made in 1963 is the one awarded today, and a 1993 replica is displayed when the Presentation Cup is away.

Franchises move and rename, so a champion’s name is shown as the club was called when it won. The Cup was not awarded in 1919, when the Spanish flu cancelled the final, or in 2005, after the 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled by a lockout.

A worked example

A franchise with a real recent championship run appears across consecutive years in rotation, exactly matching the league's own record.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the real official list?
Yes — every entry is a real, official Stanley Cup champion.
Is a key needed?
No — the archive is a curated real record.
Does it include the most recent champion?
Yes — the most recent real champion is included.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why is there no champion for 2005?
The 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled in a lockout and the Cup was not awarded. The only other year it went unawarded was 1919, when the Spanish flu ended the final.
Do players really get their names on the Cup?
Yes. Players of the winning club are engraved on its bands, and since the New Jersey Devils began the tradition in 1995, each member of the winning team has been given a day with the Cup.
Are there several Stanley Cups?
Yes. The original 1892 bowl is in the Hockey Hall of Fame vault, the Presentation Cup made in 1963 is the one presented to champions, and a 1993 replica is displayed at the Hall when the Presentation Cup is unavailable.
