The story of the Super Bowl

The first Super Bowl was played on 15 January 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs. It was originally called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, a meeting between the champions of two leagues that were merging. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt used the name Super Bowl, saying it likely came from a Super Ball toy his children played with, and it became the official name from the third game, in 1969.

Roman numerals have identified each game since Super Bowl V in January 1971, with Super Bowl 50 the one exception. The number refers to the season, not the calendar year the game is played in: Super Bowl I closed out the 1966 season. The winning team receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the Packers coach who won the first two games.

The archive lets you see how dominance has shifted by era. The Patriots and Steelers share the record for the most titles, with six each. A list of winners is only a record of championships, and does not cover the many losing finalists or the teams that never reached the game.
