How The Game Awards pick Game of the Year

The Game Awards is an annual ceremony created and produced by Geoff Keighley. The first was held on 5 December 2014 in Las Vegas. It succeeded the Spike Video Game Awards, which ran from 2003 to 2013 and which Keighley had also produced. Game of the Year is its final award and is widely considered its most prestigious.

Over 100 selected media outlets and influencers each submit an unranked top-five ballot, and the games named most often become the nominees. The winner is then decided by a combined vote of 90% jury and 10% public. That produces a mix of critical favourites and popular hits. Past winners include Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014, The Witcher 3 in 2015, Overwatch in 2016, Elden Ring in 2022 and Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023.

Games released before a cutoff date in November are eligible for that year’s ceremony, and later releases move to the following year. This is a curated archive of the Game of the Year category only; it does not list the nominees or other awards.
