Where the Golden Globe drama award comes from
The first Golden Globe ceremony was held on 20 January 1944, honouring films of 1943, and the awards were presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of foreign journalists based in Los Angeles. Best Motion Picture was split into separate Drama and Musical or Comedy categories starting with the ninth ceremony, in 1952, honouring 1951 films. That split is why a film can win a Globe and still be absent from the drama list.
A film's year here is the ceremony year, and the ceremony honours the preceding year's films. The very first drama-era winner list begins with the earlier single Best Picture prizes, so the archive follows the official winner for each year, not nominees.
The ownership and voting of the awards changed in 2023. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association dissolved itself and the Golden Globes' assets were acquired by Dick Clark Productions, whose ownership includes Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge. The voting body for the 2024 ceremony was reported as 310 individuals from 76 countries, so the electorate behind recent winners is not the same as for earlier ones.
