The BAFTA Film Awards and Best Film
The British Academy Film Awards are presented by BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The Best Film award has been given since the first awards, which honoured films of 1947, and until 1969 it was called Best Film From Any Source. It is open to films from any country, so the winner may be British or from anywhere in the world.
Unlike the Oscars, BAFTA has a separate award for Outstanding British Film, so a major British production can win that without taking the top prize. Foreign-language films have had their own category since 1983. For Best Film, all film-voting BAFTA members vote at each stage: first to determine the longlist, then the nominations, then the winner, and voters must watch all the longlisted films before voting on the nominations.
The ceremony is held early in the year, in February in recent seasons such as 2025, and so lands ahead of the Oscars, which is why it is often read as a clue to the Academy's mood. The two groups do not always agree. The saver draws on a hand-curated list, updated by hand after each awards season.
