How the Vehicle Recall Feed screensaver works

The saver reads real recall campaigns from NHTSA's own public API.

Each entry shows a real manufacturer, model and affected component.

The pipeline polls a curated list of popular models each refresh.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

Where US vehicle recalls come from

In the United States, vehicle safety recalls are overseen by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, usually called NHTSA. A manufacturer that finds a safety defect or non-compliance with a federal safety standard must report it to NHTSA, and each resulting recall is tracked as a campaign with its own campaign number. NHTSA publishes recall records that identify the manufacturer, the vehicles and the component involved.

Manufacturers notify registered owners by first-class mail within 60 days of telling NHTSA of a recall decision, and the manufacturer fixes the problem free of charge, by repairing or replacing the part, offering a refund or, rarely, repurchasing the vehicle. One campaign can cover several model years and many vehicles, and a single model can appear in more than one campaign.

A recall listing does not mean a particular car is affected; that depends on the vehicle itself, which owners can check on NHTSA's recall lookup using the VIN. A listing also says little about severity, so the official notice is the place to read what the defect is and what to do.

A worked example

A real recall campaign for a real popular vehicle model scrolls past exactly as NHTSA recorded it.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real recall data?
Yes — real safety campaigns from NHTSA's own public recalls API.
Is a key needed?
No. The recallsByVehicle endpoint is fully key-less.
Does this cover every model?
No — it polls a real curated list of popular models each refresh.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why can the same model appear more than once?
Each recall is a separate campaign with its own campaign number, so a model can be recalled several times for different problems.
Does a recall mean my car is unsafe to drive?
Not necessarily. Severity varies, and the official notice for each campaign says what owners should do; this display does not give vehicle-specific advice.
Are the repairs free?
Yes. NHTSA says the manufacturer fixes the problem free of charge, but check the official campaign notice for the details that apply to your vehicle.
