How a US consumer product recall is announced
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is an independent US federal regulatory agency, established under the Consumer Product Safety Act, that oversees thousands of types of consumer products used in and around the home, in recreation and in schools. Its notices are what this saver draws from. CPSC describes recalls as arranging for a repair, replacement or refund for products that present a significant risk, either because they could contain a defect or because they violate a mandatory safety standard.
A recall notice describes the product, the hazard and the remedy, and tells owners what to do. Recalls usually have no end date, so owners should follow the guidance in the notice. Most are announced jointly with the firm involved, so the notice date is the publication date, not the date the problem began.
Some products fall outside CPSC’s jurisdiction. Food, drugs and cosmetics are mainly covered by the Food and Drug Administration, and motor vehicles by the Department of Transportation, so they will not generally appear here. A recall notice also says nothing about how many units were actually returned.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this real recall data?
- Yes — real recalls from the CPSC's own SaferProducts.gov API.
- Is a key needed?
- No. The SaferProducts.gov API is fully key-less.
- Does this cover food or drugs?
- No — it covers real general consumer products only.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- What is the difference between a recall and a safety warning?
- In a recall the company agrees to offer a remedy such as a refund, repair or replacement. CPSC can instead issue a unilateral warning when the manufacturer, distributor or retailer has not agreed to a recall, urging consumers to stop using the product.
- Which products does CPSC not cover?
- Food, drugs and cosmetics are mainly covered by the FDA, and motor vehicles by the Department of Transportation. Tobacco, firearms and boats are also outside CPSC’s remit.
- Does a recall ever expire?
- CPSC says recalls usually have no end date, so owners should keep following the guidance in the notice for as long as they own the product.
