How the Europeana Culture Showcase screensaver works

The saver reads real museum objects from Europeana's own search API.

Each object shows its real title, creator and contributing institution.

The pipeline refreshes hourly, rotating through a real curated set.

A free Europeana key removes the shared demo key's light throttle.

Where Europeana's objects come from

Europeana is a web portal for digitised European cultural heritage, created by the European Union and governed by the Europeana Foundation, which is incorporated under Dutch law. It brings together records from more than 3,000 institutions, including museums, libraries and archives, and lets people search them in one place.

Europeana works as an aggregator. Institutions keep their originals and supply descriptive records, usually with a preview, often through national, regional or thematic aggregators that collect data from many institutions and pass it on. The provider field therefore names the contributing museum or archive, not necessarily the original maker.

Each record is metadata written by the contributing institution, so titles may appear in the original language, creators can be given in varied forms, and quality and detail vary between contributors. Rights also vary from object to object, so a displayed image should not be assumed to be free to reuse. The showcase is a sampling of what is catalogued, not a ranking of the most important European art.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real museum data?
Yes — real cultural-heritage objects from Europeana's own API.
Is a key needed?
A shared demo key works; a free key removes its light throttle.
Are the images real?
Yes — real public-domain or openly-licensed museum images.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Does Europeana host the original artworks?
No. Europeana aggregates descriptive records and previews, while the contributing institution keeps the object and often the high-resolution image.
Why are titles in different languages?
Records are written by the contributing institutions, so titles often appear in the language of the institution that supplied them. A single feed can therefore contain many languages.
Can I reuse the images shown?
Not automatically. Rights differ between objects and are set out by the contributing institution, so check each object’s own rights information before reusing it.
