How the Speedrun World Records screensaver works

The saver polls speedrun.com's public API for the most recently verified runs, with no key required.

Each run scrolls through with its real game, category and finishing time.

A running count tracks new runs seen since you started watching.

The feed refreshes on a schedule to catch real newly verified records.

Speedrun.com, verification and the meaning of a record

Speedrunning is playing a video game, or part of one, to finish it as quickly as possible, often by following planned routes that skip sections through sequence breaking or glitches. Speedrun.com is a community site created in 2014 to host leaderboards for many games, each organised into categories such as Any%, 100% or a specific route. Each leaderboard has moderators who review submissions and decide whether a run is valid.

Runners usually record footage as proof and for accurate timing, and some games require extras such as a handcam showing the controller. A submitted run does not appear on the leaderboard until a moderator verifies it against the rules for that game and category. Those rules also state how time is measured, so comparing times across categories or games is not meaningful.

Some points are worth keeping in mind. A new top time can be set in a minor category, such as a niche subcategory or a single-level run, so a world record does not imply a famous game. Runs can later be rejected or removed if evidence of cheating, such as an altered timer or spliced footage, is found. The feed reflects verification activity at that moment, not the date the run was performed, which could be earlier.

A worked example

You might see a real run scroll past — a classic platformer finished in under ten minutes, or a modern title's any% category — a genuine verified time from speedrun.com.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Are these all world records?
The feed shows recently verified runs broadly, which include personal bests alongside genuine world records.
Is a key needed?
No — speedrun.com's public API is free and key-less.
Is speedrun.com official?
It's the speedrunning community's largest and most-trusted real leaderboard and verification platform.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What does Any% mean?
A category where the aim is simply to finish the game by any means the rules allow, with no requirement to collect everything. It often permits glitches and shortcuts.
What is real-time attack?
An unassisted run played by a human in real time, as opposed to a tool-assisted run. Each leaderboard's rules say exactly how its time is measured.
Can a verified record be removed later?
Yes. Runs can be rejected if evidence of rule-breaking appears, and a time can be retimed or disputed if the recorded footage does not match.
