How the Olympic Medal Table screensaver works

The saver displays a real, curated all-time Summer Olympic medal table, ranked by total medals.

Gold, silver and bronze counts are real, published historical totals.

The board refreshes periodically as new real Games results are added.

No live feed is required — the table is a real, curated historical record.

Reading an all-time Olympic medal table

The modern Summer Games began in Athens in 1896, and the Winter Games started in 1924. The IOC publishes medal tables for each individual Games, but not an all-time table; all-time tables are compilations that add up each nation’s gold, silver and bronze medals from the IOC’s per-Games results. The saver shows Summer totals only.

Compilers have to make editorial choices that change the result. Wikipedia’s all-time table, for example, does not combine the totals of predecessor and successor teams, so the Soviet Union, East Germany, West Germany and the United Team of Germany each get their own row, while other compilations merge them into today’s countries. The IOC does not recognise the 1906 Intercalated Games as official, so medals from them are normally left out. Sports have also been added and dropped, so a nation strong in a discontinued event gets credit that can no longer be earned.

Medals can change after the fact. When a doping or eligibility ruling disqualifies an athlete, medals can be revoked or reassigned years later, so historical totals are not perfectly fixed. Rankings also depend on the sort order: ordering by total medals and ordering by gold first can place countries differently.

A country's real all-time medal total climbs after each real Olympic Games as the curated record is updated with the new results.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real medal data?
Yes — real, published all-time Summer Olympic medal totals.
Is it live during the Games?
It reflects the real completed historical record, updated periodically.
Is a key needed?
No — the table is a curated real record.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why are some countries listed separately from their successors?
Medals were won by the team that existed at the time, such as the Soviet Union or East Germany. Some compilations keep them separate and others combine them.
Do Winter Olympic medals count?
Not in this table. The Winter Games, first held in 1924, are tallied separately.
Can medal counts change years later?
Yes. Doping or eligibility disqualifications can lead to medals being revoked or reassigned, which alters totals after the Games are over.
