A short history of Best Picture
The Academy Awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first ceremony was held in 1929 and honoured films from 1927 and 1928, with Wings winning the top prize, then called Outstanding Picture. Because the ceremony takes place in the year after a film’s release, the year attached to a winner is easy to misread: a film from one calendar year wins at the following year’s ceremony.
The saver pairs each winner with its ceremony number, which is why the 1929 event is the first and later ones count upward. The size of the field has changed a lot. The first ceremony had three nominees, the number grew to ten in the 1930s, and it was limited to five from 1945 until 2009. In 2009 the Academy expanded the field to ten and switched to a preferential ballot, in which voters rank the nominees. Since then the number of nominees has varied, and it has been ten since the 94th ceremony.
The list is a record of the Academy’s voting members’ choices, not a ranking of quality or box-office success, and many acclaimed films never won. Eligibility and dates follow the Academy’s rules in each year, which have shifted over the decades.

- Is a key needed?
- No — the archive is a curated real record.
- Does it include this year's winner?
- Yes, added after each real ceremony as site content updates ship.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Why does a film’s year differ from its ceremony year?
- Films released in one calendar year are honoured at a ceremony held in the next, so a winner can be listed with two different years.
- What is a preferential ballot?
- Voters rank the nominees rather than choosing one, and the count transfers votes between choices, a system also called instant runoff voting. The Academy adopted it for Best Picture in 2009.
