How the Emmy drama award is decided
The Primetime Emmy Awards are presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The first ceremony was held on 25 January 1949 at the Hollywood Athletic Club. The name comes from Immy, a slang term for the image orthicon tube used in early television cameras; Harry Lubcke, a television engineer and the Academy's third president, proposed it, and it was feminised to Emmy to suit the statuette of a woman.
Programmes are eligible for the Primetime Emmys if they first aired on American television between 1 June and 31 May of the awards year, which is why ceremonies fall in the autumn or later rather than straight after the season ends. The 2023 ceremony was postponed from its scheduled September date because of the Hollywood strikes.
Nominations are voted by Television Academy members, mostly within their own peer groups. For the outstanding program categories, which include Outstanding Drama Series, all voting members can take part in the nominations round. A title shown here is a winner of that category, not simply a nominee.
