The Album of the Year award
The Grammy Awards are presented by the Recording Academy, originally the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The first ceremony took place in 1959, and Album of the Year is one of the four general field categories, alongside Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. It rewards the album as a whole, not a single track.
The first winner was Henry Mancini for The Music from Peter Gunn. Since then the list has moved through eras of pop, rock, soul, country, hip-hop and jazz, and it has often been a lightning rod for argument about taste and who is overlooked. Recording Academy members decide the winner. Before 2021 a Nominations Review Committee narrowed the field to five nominees; those committees were disbanded in 2021.
Under the current rules, the award goes to the artist, featured artists, producers, songwriters of new material, mastering engineers, and recording engineers or mixers, with engineers and mixers qualifying only if credited on at least 20% of the album’s playing time. A Grammy year is the ceremony year, while the recordings were released in an earlier eligibility period, so an album’s release date normally falls before the year shown. This is a curated archive of winners only, with no nominees.
