Reading a box office gross

A film's box office gross is the ticket revenue from its theatrical run. Box Office Mojo, a widely used tracking site owned by IMDb, notes that its tracking covers theatrical earnings only, not other revenue such as home entertainment sales and rentals, television rights or product placement fees. The milestones this screensaver cycles through are drawn from published film industry reporting.

Two terms matter when you read a number. Domestic refers to North America: IMDb defines it as the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico unless noted otherwise, while some older usage means only the United States and Canada. International covers the rest of the world, and worldwide combines the two. Different sources can draw the domestic line slightly differently.

A gross is money paid by audiences, not profit. It says nothing about production or marketing costs or how revenue is split, so a large gross does not by itself tell you whether a film made money. Ticket prices also change over decades, so comparing a record from one era with another is unreliable unless the figures are adjusted, and totals quoted by different sources can differ.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real box office data?
Yes — real, publicly reported box office figures from film industry sources.
Is a key needed?
No — the record is a curated real periodic snapshot.
Is this adjusted for inflation?
Figures are shown as originally reported, not inflation-adjusted, unless noted.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
What is the difference between domestic and worldwide gross?
Domestic means North America (IMDb counts the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico), international is the rest of the world, and worldwide combines the two.
Does a high gross mean a film was profitable?
No. A gross counts ticket revenue only, not production or marketing costs or how the revenue is shared, so profit depends on those as well as the total.
Does box office include home entertainment or TV rights?
No. Box Office Mojo says its tracking covers theatrical earnings only, excluding home entertainment sales and rentals, television rights and product placement fees.
