New Token Listings Screensaver
The New Token Listings screensaver watches CoinGecko's top 250 coins by market cap live and flags any coin that wasn't there before, drawn key-less with no third-party listings API. It's free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the New Token Listings screensaver works
The saver fetches CoinGecko's real top 250 coins by market cap, with no key required.
Your browser remembers which ids it has already seen, stored locally on your device.
Any id that's new since the last check scrolls onto the feed as a genuine new entrant.
The first run establishes a real baseline and shows nothing until the next check finds something new.
What entering the top 250 does and does not mean
CoinGecko is a cryptocurrency data aggregator that publishes prices and rankings for thousands of coins. It ranks them by market capitalisation, which its methodology page defines as the current USD price multiplied by the circulating supply. That makes the ranking only as good as the supply figure behind it.
Circulating supply is not measured directly for most tokens. CoinGecko says the figures come from the token teams and are verified by its own team, and for smart-contract tokens it works out supply as total supply minus locked allocations such as foundation, investor and team holdings. Where it cannot verify a figure, the supply field is left blank.
A coin that appears in the top 250 for the first time did not necessarily launch recently. It might be a brand-new token that gained value quickly, an older project that has risen over time, or a coin whose supply data was updated so that its market cap crossed the line. Coins also drop out as others overtake them, so a name can leave and return. Entry is a signal of market-cap movement, not of quality, and this display is informational only, not a recommendation to buy or avoid anything.
A worked example
A little while after opening the saver, a coin's name scrolls in — the real moment it broke into CoinGecko's top 250 by market cap, not a delayed news report.
Settings & tips
- Accent recolours the feed entries.
- The very first run shows nothing new by design — it's building its baseline.
- This tracks the top 250 by market cap, not every token ever created — CoinGecko's full ~18,000-coin list is too rate-limited for a reliable live client-side feed.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does it show nothing at first?
- It needs a real baseline of what's already in the top 250 before it can flag anything as genuinely new — that's by design, not a bug.
- Is a key needed?
- No. CoinGecko's public markets endpoint is free and key-less.
- Does this catch every brand-new token?
- No — only coins that break into the top 250 by market cap. CoinGecko's full coin list is rate-limited too tightly for a reliable live feed.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- What is market capitalisation?
- CoinGecko calculates it as a coin's current price multiplied by its circulating supply. It is a rough measure of size, but it depends on supply figures that come from the token teams and may be incomplete or contested.
- Is every new entrant a newly created coin?
- No. Some are long-standing projects that climbed into the top 250, and some cross the line when their supply or price data is revised.
- Does a new listing mean a coin is trustworthy?
- No. Ranking is based on price and supply, not on review of the project, so a new entry says nothing about safety or legitimacy.
