How the Exchange Reserves Board screensaver works

The saver fetches real current tracked reserves for major exchanges from DefiLlama, with no key required.

Exchanges rank top to bottom by real reserve value, with each bar sized to scale.

The board eases smoothly if the ranking shifts on refresh.

Choose how many exchanges appear on the board at once.

What exchange reserves can and cannot tell you

A centralised crypto exchange holds customers’ coins in wallets that it controls, and some of those wallet addresses are public. DefiLlama, an analytics site that aggregates on-chain data, lists exchanges that have shared wallet data with it and calculates the total value of the assets those wallets hold. The result is the figure behind each bar: the assets an exchange can be seen to hold, priced in US dollars. For at least some exchanges, the wallet list comes from a blog post or disclosure that the exchange itself published.

That number is one side of a balance sheet only. It shows what is held, not what the exchange owes its customers, so it cannot prove solvency by itself. Reserves also depend on which wallets an exchange chooses to disclose, so a smaller figure may reflect less disclosure rather than fewer assets. DefiLlama also notes that assets an exchange keeps in other custodians’ vaults are not counted toward its figure.

Because the total is priced in dollars, it moves whenever coin prices move, even if no one deposits or withdraws anything. DefiLlama refreshes its CEX asset figures hourly. A sudden drop can therefore be a market sell-off, a real outflow, or a wallet reshuffle. Treat the board as a rough picture of scale, not a judgement of any exchange’s safety.

A worked example

You'll see the real current largest tracked exchanges at the top — genuine publicly attested reserve figures, not self-reported marketing numbers.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

What are exchange reserves?
The real assets a centralized exchange holds on-chain, independently observable and tracked as a transparency measure since major industry collapses.
Is a key needed?
No. DefiLlama's public API is free and key-less.
Is this every exchange?
It reflects DefiLlama's real tracked set of major exchanges with observable on-chain reserves, not every venue worldwide.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why does an exchange’s reserve change when nobody trades?
The value is priced in dollars, so a change in the market price of the held coins alters the total on its own. Real deposits and withdrawals add to that.
Do high reserves mean an exchange is safe?
Not necessarily. Reserves are only the asset side. Without a view of what the exchange owes its customers, or an independent audit, they cannot confirm that everyone could be repaid.
Where do the wallet addresses come from?
They come from wallet data that exchanges have shared or published, which DefiLlama collects. A wallet that is undisclosed is simply missing from the total.
