What trending means on CoinGecko
CoinGecko is a cryptocurrency data aggregator that tracks prices, trading volume and market capitalisation for coins. Alongside those figures it publishes a trending list, which its API documentation describes as the coins with the most popular searches on CoinGecko over the last 24 hours. The list is therefore a measure of curiosity among CoinGecko's own visitors, not of trading volume or price performance.
Search interest has many causes. A new listing, a token launch, a viral moment or bad news can all send people to look a coin up, and interest in a coin says nothing about whether the news is good or bad. Small, obscure coins can appear in the list as readily as established ones, which is why some entries are unfamiliar names with very high market cap rank numbers.
The market cap rank shown beside each coin is its position when coins are sorted by market capitalisation, which is price multiplied by circulating supply. A low rank number means a large coin and a large number means a small one. Neither trending status nor rank indicates quality or future price, and very small coins can be risky.
A worked example
A small, low-ranked coin suddenly appearing at the top of the trending list is a real signal that search interest has genuinely spiked — often ahead of wider news coverage.

Frequently asked questions
- Is trending based on price or search?
- Real search and view activity on CoinGecko itself — not purely price movement, which is what makes it distinct.
- Is a key needed?
- No. CoinGecko's public API is free and key-less.
- How often does the list change?
- It reflects real, live search interest and can shift within minutes.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Does trending mean the price is going up?
- No. Trending reflects how often a coin is searched, and people search for coins that are rising, falling or in the news for other reasons.
- What does market cap rank mean?
- It is the coin's position in the list ordered by market capitalisation. Rank 1 is the largest, and larger numbers are progressively smaller coins.
- Why do unfamiliar coins appear?
- A new listing, a viral moment or a news story can push a small coin into the most-searched list even though few people had heard of it before.
