Crypto Ticker Tape Screensaver
The Crypto Ticker Tape screensaver scrolls a classic ticker of real live crypto prices and daily moves, drawn key-less and live from CoinGecko. It's free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the Crypto Ticker Tape screensaver works
The saver fetches real live prices and 24-hour changes for top coins by market cap, with no key required.
Each coin scrolls past with its symbol, real price and real percentage change, colour-coded up or down.
The tape loops continuously, refreshing its underlying real prices on a schedule.
Choose how many coins appear in the rotation.
Reading a crypto ticker tape
The ticker tape is a financial display with a long history: telegraph-driven ticker machines, credited to Edward Calahan, printed stock symbols and prices on a strip of paper in the 1860s, and brokers read the tape as it fed out. The scrolling bar on a modern news channel descends from it, and the format suits crypto well because markets for digital assets trade around the clock, with no opening or closing bell.
Each item on a tape shows an asset symbol, a price and a percentage change over a set window, here twenty-four hours. A percentage change is measured against the price at the start of the window, so a coin with a low price can swing by a large percentage with a small change in money terms. Coins are ranked by market capitalisation, which CoinGecko calculates as price multiplied by circulating supply. It is a rough measure of relative size, not of quality or safety.
Prices for the same coin differ across exchanges, and CoinGecko’s price is a volume-weighted average across the exchanges it tracks, so no number on the tape is the single true price. Small coins can be thinly traded and volatile. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell, and a 24-hour change says little about where a price goes next.
A worked example
Watch the tape and real green and red entries scroll by continuously — a genuine live snapshot of the crypto market's daily movers, not a static list.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from Crypto Heatmap?
- Crypto Heatmap shows a grid snapshot; this is a continuously scrolling tape, the crypto equivalent of a classic stock ticker.
- Is a key needed?
- No. CoinGecko's public API is free and key-less.
- How current are the prices?
- Real live prices, refreshed on a short schedule.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- What does market capitalisation mean for a coin?
- On CoinGecko it is the coin’s price multiplied by its circulating supply. It indicates relative size but can mislead when much of the supply is locked or not freely traded.
- Why does the percentage change look dramatic for small coins?
- With less trading volume, a few trades can move the price substantially, so smaller assets tend to show larger swings than the biggest ones.
- Why do prices differ from the ones on my exchange?
- Each exchange has its own order book, while an aggregator such as CoinGecko shows a volume-weighted average across many exchanges, refreshed every few minutes, so small differences are normal.
