How the Hospital Bed Density Board screensaver works

The saver reads real hospital bed density per 10,000 population data from the WHO's own Global Health Observatory API.

Countries are ranked by their real latest reported hospital bed density.

The pipeline refreshes on the WHO's own periodic release schedule.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

What hospital bed density measures

Hospital beds per 10,000 population is a long-standing indicator in the WHO’s Global Health Observatory. It counts inpatient beds in public and private, general and specialised hospitals and rehabilitation centres, usually covering both acute and chronic care, divided by the population. Using a rate makes a small country comparable to a large one.

The ranking has quirks worth knowing. Values come from national and regional reports, so the reference year differs by country. In some countries only public-sector beds are counted, and depending on the source and how the data are monitored, figures may not be exactly comparable across countries. A very high number can reflect a small population or a health system that relies heavily on inpatient care, rather than abundant care.

A bed is a measure of capacity, not of staff, equipment or quality, and a country with fewer beds may deliver care in outpatient or home settings. Because definitions and reporting differ, differences of a few points should not be over-read.

A worked example

A real country's most recent reported hospital bed density is ranked against the real others, with bars easing into place as the board loads.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real health data?
Yes — real hospital bed density per 10,000 population figures from the WHO's own Global Health Observatory API.
Is a key needed?
No. The GHO OData API is fully key-less.
How often does it update?
The pipeline re-reads the WHO's own dataset periodically, on whatever schedule WHO republishes that indicator.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Does more beds mean better healthcare?
Not by itself. The figure shows physical capacity only; it says nothing about staffing, outcomes or how care is organised.
Why do the years differ between countries?
Each country reports on its own schedule, and the board uses the latest year available for each.
