How smartphone market share is measured

Smartphone market share tables usually come from analyst firms such as IDC and Counterpoint Research, which publish quarterly estimates of how many handsets each vendor shipped. The key word is shipped: a shipment counts units sent by the manufacturer into the sales channel, which is not the same as units sold to and used by customers, so channel stock can distort a quarter.

Share is a vendor's units divided by all units shipped worldwide in the period. Rankings can depend on method: firms apply different definitions of what counts as a vendor (some roll sub-brands together) and different estimation models, so the same quarter can produce slightly different tables from different firms. Estimates are also revised as better data arrives.

Global figures hide regional patterns. A vendor can lead in particular countries or price bands and barely register elsewhere, so a modest global share can still mean a strong local position. Share also says nothing about revenue or profit, because a unit count ignores what each phone sold for.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real market data?
Yes — from real, published quarterly market research reports.
Is a key needed?
No — figures are a curated real periodic snapshot.
How often does it change?
Once each real reporting quarter.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Is market share the same as the number of users?
No. It counts shipments in a period, not the installed base of phones in use, so older devices still in service are not included.
Why do different analysts report different numbers?
They use different data sources, definitions of vendor and estimation methods, and they revise estimates over time.
Does share reflect revenue?
No. Unit share ignores price, so a premium maker can earn more revenue than its share of units suggests.
