How the Global Fuel Price Board screensaver works
The saver displays a real, curated comparison of retail gasoline prices, converted to a common currency for comparison.
Countries are ranked by their real published price per liter.
The board refreshes periodically as real fuel-price updates are published.
No live feed is required — figures are a real, curated periodic snapshot.
Why pump prices differ between countries
Retail petrol and diesel prices combine several layers: the cost of crude oil, refining and distribution, the retailer's margin, and taxes. Crude is traded in global markets, so differences between countries owe a great deal to fuel taxes and subsidies. Some governments levy heavy excise and value-added taxes, while others hold pump prices down through subsidies.
To compare countries, local prices are converted into a single reference currency using exchange rates, which introduces its own distortion. A price can move simply because a currency strengthened or weakened, even when the pump price in local money did not change. Converted prices also ignore local incomes, so the same dollar figure is a much heavier burden in a low-income country.
Compilations of pump prices may be gathered on different dates and for different fuel grades, so small gaps between countries should not be over-read. Regional variation inside large countries is also hidden by a single national figure. The board is a comparison of snapshots, not a forecast, and prices can change with crude oil markets.
A worked example
A country with heavily subsidized fuel shows a real, dramatically lower price than a country with high fuel taxes, exactly as published.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this real fuel price data?
- Yes — real published retail gasoline prices by country.
- Is a key needed?
- No — figures are a curated real periodic snapshot.
- How current are the prices?
- As current as the most recent real periodic content update.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Why are prices so different in neighbouring countries?
- Largely because taxes and subsidies differ, rather than the cost of the oil itself.
- Does the currency conversion affect the ranking?
- Yes. Exchange-rate movements can change the converted price even if the local pump price stays the same.
- Is the price the same for all fuel types?
- No. Petrol and diesel are priced and taxed differently, so a comparison should keep to one grade.
