How the Europe PMC New Articles screensaver works

The background pipeline polls Europe PMC (EMBL-EBI) — a major biomedical and life-science literature index — every few minutes for new records.

Each new item eases up into its slot at the bottom of the list as it arrives.

A header shows a live/connecting indicator and the last update time.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

What Europe PMC indexes

Europe PMC is a literature service hosted by EMBL-EBI and supported by a group of life-science funders. It brings together abstracts, the full text of many open-access papers, and preprints in a single searchable index, and its collection also includes selected agricultural abstracts and life-science patent abstracts. Its public API is what the saver queries for recently added records.

Because it is broader than a pure journal index, the feed is varied. You will see peer-reviewed articles alongside preprints and other record types, and an item can enter the index some time after the paper’s own date. Each record carries a title and author string, and the titles span many areas of biomedicine and life science.

Europe PMC also applies text mining and machine learning to extract annotations such as genes, diseases and chemicals from abstracts and full text, though the saver shows only the headline fields. Being indexed means a record exists in the service; it does not signal quality, and preprints in particular have not been through journal peer review. Medical findings shown should not be read as guidance.

A real recent item scrolls into view with its details, then eases upward as newer ones arrive behind it.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — it's read live from Europe PMC (EMBL-EBI), a major biomedical and life-science literature index.
Is a key needed?
No. This is a fully key-less public API.
How often does it refresh?
The pipeline polls for new records every few minutes.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
How is Europe PMC different from PubMed?
Europe PMC includes PubMed-type abstracts but also full text of many open-access papers, preprints and other sources, plus text-mined annotations, in one index.
Are preprints included?
Yes. Europe PMC indexes preprints from a number of preprint servers, so some items have not been through journal peer review.
What does newly indexed mean?
It means recently added to Europe PMC’s index, which can be later than the paper’s own publication date.
