Elements & Modalities Balance Screensaver
The Elements & Modalities Balance screensaver tallies the real elemental mix of the sky right now. It is free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the Elements & Modalities Balance screensaver works
The saver computes each planet's real current zodiac sign.
Every sign has a real fixed element and modality in its own definition.
The saver tallies how many real planets fall in each element and modality.
Everything is computed locally — no network, no key.
Four elements, three modalities: the grid behind the signs
Western astrology sorts its twelve zodiac signs with two overlapping classifications. The first is the four classical elements, fire, earth, air and water, borrowed from ancient Greek natural philosophy. The second is the three modalities, cardinal, fixed and mutable, which relate to the sign's position in its season. Four elements times three modalities gives exactly twelve combinations, so every sign has a unique pair, with Aries as cardinal fire and Taurus as fixed earth.
These categories are set out in Ptolemy's second-century work usually called the Tetrabiblos and were carried through later medieval and Renaissance astrological texts. An astrologer reading a chart counts where the planets fall: a cluster in fire signs is usually described as energetic, one in water signs as emotional, and a strong cardinal presence as initiating.
The tally on the screen is a straightforward count of placements by category, calculated from planetary positions. The interpretations attached to elements and modalities are a cultural tradition rather than a scientific finding, and astrology's predictive claims have not been supported by controlled testing. Treat the balance as a way into the symbolism of the system, not as a personality test.
A worked example
If several real planets currently sit in Water signs, the Water bar grows taller than Fire, Earth or Air.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the element-per-sign mapping real?
- Yes — it is the traditional, fixed element and modality assigned to each of the 12 signs.
- Which planets are counted?
- The Sun, Moon and the eight real planets, each in its current computed sign.
- Is a key needed?
- No. Everything is computed locally in your browser.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- What do cardinal, fixed and mutable mean?
- They describe where a sign falls in its season: cardinal signs begin it, fixed signs sit in the middle, and mutable signs close it and lead to the next.
- Why are there four elements?
- They come from ancient Greek philosophy, which described matter as combinations of fire, earth, air and water, and astrology kept the scheme as a symbolic framework.
- Does the balance of elements predict anything?
- No. Readings of an element or modality balance belong to astrological tradition, and astrology's predictive claims have not been supported by controlled testing.
