How the Blockchain Size Ticker screensaver works

The saver fetches the blockchain's real recorded size history, with no key required.

A large readout shows the current real total size in gigabytes.

A chart traces how that total has grown over recent years as new blocks are added.

Readings refresh on a schedule to track real chain growth.

Why the Bitcoin ledger keeps getting bigger

Every full Bitcoin node keeps a blockchain it has validated itself: the ordered record of confirmed transactions. The protocol targets a block roughly every ten minutes, derived from adjusting difficulty every 2,016 blocks against a two-week ideal, so the record only grows. The number on screen is the total size of that stored data, in gigabytes.

Growth is not constant. It depends on how many transactions are made and how big each one is. Segregated Witness, activated on mainnet on 24 August 2017, replaced the old 1 MB block size limit with a block weight limit of 4,000,000, in which witness (signature) data counts for a quarter of its real size. That allowed more transactions per block and changed how block capacity is counted.

The size says something about the cost of independently verifying the system, not about its value or use. A new node must first download and check the whole history; Bitcoin Core’s own requirements page describes this as a one-time download on first start. Nodes can also run in pruned mode, which still validates everything but discards old raw block data to save disk space, so the chart shows the chain itself, not what a typical user must store.

A worked example

The chart climbs in a steady real staircase — every roughly ten minutes, another real block adds to the permanent, ever-growing ledger.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Why does the blockchain keep growing?
Every new real block permanently appends its transaction data to the chain — nothing is ever removed.
Is a key needed?
No key is required for this light, periodic data fetch.
How big is it now?
The live readout shows the real current total, which grows continuously.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Can a node run without storing the whole chain?
Yes. A pruned node in Bitcoin Core still validates the chain, but it discards old raw block data, so it cannot return old blocks or look up old transactions from its own storage.
Does a bigger blockchain mean more adoption?
Not necessarily. Size reflects the volume and shape of transactions, not the number of users, so it is a poor proxy for adoption.
