How the Zodiac Season Tracker screensaver works
The saver checks today's real calendar date against the twelve standard, fixed zodiac date ranges.
The current season's symbol and a countdown to the next season's start are both shown.
The computation runs entirely in your browser — no network fetch is needed.
Dates follow the widely used tropical zodiac calendar convention.
Where the zodiac date ranges come from
The zodiac began in Babylonian astronomy, where astronomers around the late 5th century BC split the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path, into twelve equal signs of 30 degrees each. Babylonian star catalogues reached Greek astronomy in the 4th century BC, and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos and Almagest later set out the tropical version used in Western astrology.
The dates used for each sign are a calendar convention. In the tropical zodiac the year starts at the March equinox, when the Sun is at zero degrees Aries, and each boundary falls around the 20th of a month, give or take a few days depending on the year and time zone. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, discovered by Hipparchus around 130 BC, the equinox point has moved from Aries into Pisces, so tropical Aries now lies largely within the constellation Pisces.
This display uses fixed calendar dates, so people born on boundary days may find a different sign in other sources. It marks a calendar season, not any claim about personality or events. Sidereal zodiacs, used in Hindu astrology, are anchored to the stars and apply an ayanamsa correction for precession, which accumulates at about one degree per 72 years.
A worked example
As the calendar crosses into a new date range, the display automatically switches symbols and starts counting down to the following season.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this real astrology or a horoscope?
- It only tracks the standard calendar date ranges associated with each sign — no personalized predictions.
- Is a key needed?
- No — it is a pure local calculation.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Which zodiac system does it use?
- The widely used tropical (Western) zodiac date ranges.
- Why do sign dates vary by a day between sources?
- The Sun's crossing time shifts slightly from year to year and depends on time zone, so published boundary dates differ a little.
- Are the signs the same as the constellations?
- Not any more. Precession has moved the equinox from Aries into Pisces, so a tropical sign no longer lines up with the constellation of the same name, and the constellations also differ in size.
- What is the tropical zodiac?
- A system anchored to the seasons, with Aries beginning at the March equinox, as opposed to the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars.
