YouTube Trending Now Screensaver
The YouTube Trending Now screensaver ranks real trending videos for a chosen region by real view count. It is free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the YouTube Trending Now screensaver works
The saver reads YouTube's own real trending chart for a region from the YouTube Data API.
Each entry shows a real video title, channel and real view count.
The pipeline refreshes the board on its own schedule.
A free Google Cloud API key is required for this endpoint.
Reading YouTube's trending chart
The YouTube Data API exposes a chart through the videos.list method: setting chart=mostPopular returns the most popular videos for a region, selected with a regionCode that is an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code. An optional videoCategoryId narrows the chart to one category, and if it is omitted the chart is not restricted to a category.
The documentation does not describe how the chart is ranked or selected, so the list you see is whatever the API returns for the chosen country. View counts are cumulative totals, not views today, so an older upload with a long tail can sit beside a clip that went up hours ago.
Regional charts can differ because each country returns its own list. Access to the API uses a Google Cloud key and a daily quota: the default allocation is 10,000 units per day, and each videos.list call costs one unit. A request for a chart that is unavailable in a region returns a videoChartNotFound error.
A worked example
A real video with millions of real views sits at the top of the board, exactly matching YouTube's own trending chart.
