How the World Bank Indicator Explorer screensaver works

The saver reads real, most-recently-reported indicator values by country from the World Bank's open data API.

Countries are ranked by their real reported value, highest first.

The board cycles through several real indicators like internet use and renewable energy share.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

Where World Bank indicators come from

The World Bank publishes a large open database of development indicators, with its Indicators API offering nearly 16,000 time series drawn from more than 45 databases, including World Development Indicators. Topics range from internet use and electricity access to health and education. Each indicator has a code, such as SP.POP.TOTL for total population, and a definition with a methodology note. The data is open and the API needs no key.

The World Bank largely compiles these series from national and international sources rather than collecting them itself. Those sources report on their own schedules, so the latest value for each country is often from a different year. A country ranked here may show a recent figure while another shows one from several years earlier, and some countries are missing when no recent value exists. Percentage indicators are also capped by definition, so the top of a ranking can bunch together near 100.

Treat the ranking as a quick comparison of reported values, not a precise league table. Definitions differ between indicators, and values can be revised when sources correct or re-estimate their numbers.

A worked example

A country with a real reported internet-user rate near 100% sits at the top of the board, exactly matching the World Bank's own figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this real economic data?
Yes — real development indicators from the World Bank's own API.
Is a key needed?
No. The World Bank's indicator API is fully key-less.
How current are the figures?
Each shows the real most-recently-reported year per country, which varies.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why do countries show values from different years?
Each country's data is reported on its own timetable, so the most recent available observation can be from different years.
Why are some countries missing from a ranking?
A country appears only when a recent value exists for that indicator, so gaps appear where no recent figure has been published.
What is an indicator code?
A short dotted identifier, such as SP.POP.TOTL for total population, that names one data series so it can be requested from the World Bank API.
