How the European Unemployment Rate Board screensaver works

The saver reads real monthly unemployment-rate data per country from Eurostat's own API.

Countries are ranked by their real reported rate, lowest first.

The pipeline refreshes the board on Eurostat's own monthly release schedule.

No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

How Eurostat counts unemployment

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union. It follows the International Labour Organization definition: an unemployed person is aged 15 to 74, without work in the reference week, available to start within the next two weeks, and has actively sought work at some time in the last four weeks. The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the labour force.

Monthly series are published seasonally adjusted as well as unadjusted and trend series. Seasonal adjustment removes regular calendar patterns such as holiday hiring, so month-to-month changes are easier to compare. The board ranks countries from lowest to highest latest rate.

The benchmark source is the EU Labour Force Survey, a sample survey, and Eurostat notes that its latest figures are typically provisional because full-quarter results arrive roughly 75 days after the reference period ends. Because of the harmonised ILO definition, the figures can differ from national measures such as registered-jobseeker counts. The rate does not capture underemployment or people who have stopped searching.

A worked example

A country with a real reported unemployment rate near 3% sits at the top of the board, exactly matching Eurostat's own published figure.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real unemployment data?
Yes — real seasonally-adjusted rates from Eurostat's own API.
Is a key needed?
No. Eurostat's dissemination API is fully key-less.
How often does this update?
Eurostat publishes real updated figures on its own monthly schedule.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why can national figures differ from Eurostat's?
Eurostat uses the harmonised ILO definition, while national agencies may count registered jobseekers or apply other rules, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
What does seasonally adjusted mean?
Regular seasonal swings, such as holiday hiring, have been statistically removed, leaving a clearer view of underlying movement.
Are the latest figures final?
Not necessarily. Eurostat notes the latest figures are typically provisional, because full quarterly Labour Force Survey results arrive roughly 75 days after the reference period.
