EU Inflation Rate Board Screensaver
The EU Inflation Rate Board screensaver ranks real harmonised inflation rates by country. It is free, runs in your browser, and ESC exits.
How the EU Inflation Rate Board screensaver works
The saver reads real HICP data from Eurostat's own statistics API.
Countries are ranked by their real latest annual inflation rate.
The pipeline refreshes on Eurostat's own monthly release schedule.
No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.
How HICP inflation is measured
The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices, HICP, is the EU’s consumer price index calculated according to a harmonised approach and a single set of definitions, which makes inflation comparable across countries. There is a national HICP for each member state, plus aggregates for the euro area and the whole EU. The European Central Bank aims for 2% inflation over the medium term and uses the euro-area HICP as the appropriate measure for that goal.
The figure shown is the annual rate: the price change of consumer goods and services between a month and the same month of the previous year. Because it is a year-on-year comparison, it carries over earlier price swings, so a country can show high inflation months after the prices that caused it stopped rising.
HICP can differ from the index a country publishes at home, which may use a different method. The ECB notes, for instance, that HICP does not yet include owner-occupied housing costs, which the European Statistical System is studying. Eurostat publishes a flash estimate for the euro area at the end of the reference month and the full set of country data around the middle of the following month. It is an average across consumers, and a household’s own experience can differ depending on what it spends on.
A worked example

Frequently asked questions
- Is this real inflation data?
- Yes — real HICP rates from Eurostat's own official statistics API.
- Is a key needed?
- No. The Eurostat dissemination API is fully key-less.
- Does this cover non-EU countries?
- No — it covers real EU member-state HICP figures only.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
- Why might the figure differ from my country’s own inflation rate?
- Countries often publish a national index built differently, whereas HICP uses a common EU methodology. HICP also does not yet include owner-occupied housing costs.
- What does annual rate mean?
- The percentage change in the price index compared with the same month a year earlier.
- When does Eurostat publish the data?
- A flash estimate for the euro area comes at the end of the reference month, and the complete country data follows around the middle of the next month.
