The Tony Awards and Best Musical
The Tony Awards, formally the Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, honour achievement on Broadway and were first presented in 1947. They are named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director and producer who co-founded the American Theatre Wing and whose nickname was Tony. The Wing and the Broadway League present the awards together. Best Musical is the headline award for new musicals, with Best Play as its counterpart for non-musical work.
Only productions in a qualifying Broadway theatre can compete, and a Broadway house is defined largely by size, with 500 or more seats among the requirements, so a hit staged off-Broadway or elsewhere may never be considered. Nominations come from a rotating nominating committee of theatre professionals who are expected to see every new Broadway production. The winners are then chosen by a voting body of several hundred people connected to the industry, including members of the Broadway League and board members of the Wing and of theatre unions.
Winners range from classic book musicals to rock-driven shows and works adapted from films. A win can extend a run and help a tour, which is part of why the contest is closely watched. This saver displays a curated list of winners, updated by hand after each ceremony, and covers only the Best Musical category.
