How the Hugo Award Best Novel Winners screensaver works

The saver rotates through a real, curated list of Hugo Award for Best Novel winners, drawn from the award's own published history.

Each entry holds on screen for a few seconds before easing to the next.

The list is updated by hand once each real award season, not streamed live.

It runs entirely offline — no key and no connection needed.

The Hugo Awards and Worldcon voting

The Hugo Awards are honours for science fiction and fantasy, named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of the magazine Amazing Stories and regarded as one of the fathers of the genre. They are presented each year at Worldcon, which is usually held near the start of September in a different city each year. Best Novel has been awarded since 1953, the year of the first Hugos, and sits among many categories.

What makes the Hugos unusual is who decides. Nominations and votes come from supporting or attending members of the Worldcon, ordinary fans rather than a professional jury, and each member may make up to five nominations per category. Winners are chosen by instant-runoff voting, and voters can rank No Award to signal that finalists below it do not deserve a Hugo. It has won several categories over the years.

The system has also been controversial. In 2015 and 2016 the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies campaigns put forward slates of nominees that dominated the ballot, and the rules were changed in response: the E Pluribus Hugo system for choosing finalists was first used in 2017. The awards are administered under the World Science Fiction Society rules, with each Worldcon committee presenting them. The saver rotates through a curated list of Best Novel winners and is updated by hand.
