No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.

What the TMDB TV ranking reflects

TMDB, The Movie Database, is a community-edited catalogue that covers television as well as film. A series entry holds an average vote and the number of votes behind it, along with details such as first air date and origin country. The ranking is built from the ratings of TMDB's own users, not from critics.

Television ratings behave differently from film ratings. A series is judged as a whole, so its score blends episodes and seasons that may vary widely in quality. A ranking like this needs some floor on vote counts so that tiny samples cannot reach the top; TMDB's documentation for its top-rated lists describes them as a discover query sorted by average vote with a minimum vote count.

The ranking measures the enthusiasm of TMDB's contributors, not critical consensus, audience size or streaming figures, and users may rate a show from memory rather than after recently watching. Scores change as new votes arrive, so adjacent places can swap from one refresh to the next.

A worked example

A real entry's most recent reported average rating is ranked against the real others, with bars easing into place as the board loads.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — real TMDB user TV show ratings figures from TMDB (The Movie Database)'s own public API.
Is a key needed?
No. This is a fully key-less public API.
How often does it update?
The pipeline re-reads the dataset periodically, on whatever schedule it changes.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Is a higher rating the same as more viewers?
No. The ranking is about how highly voters score a show, not how many people watched it, so smaller devoted fandoms can beat mainstream hits.
Why can the order change between refreshes?
Averages move as new votes arrive, so shows with similar scores can swap places.
