How a case moves through the Storting

The Storting is Norway’s parliament, with 169 members elected every four years by proportional representation. The matters it handles are called saker, or cases. They include bills, the national budget, white papers from the government known as stortingsmeldinger, and proposals put forward by members themselves.

Every representative except the President sits on at least one of the Storting’s twelve standing committees, which are organised by subject, such as finance or energy and the environment. A committee examines the cases in its area and makes a recommendation to the full chamber. For that reason the committee attached to a case is a useful clue to its subject.

The records come from the Storting’s open data service and are mostly in Norwegian, with titles and case types kept in the original language. A case appearing here is not necessarily controversial or likely to pass, since the list includes routine matters as well as high-profile ones. The status shown reflects the official record at the time of the last refresh.
