How the Server Fault Top Questions screensaver works
The background pipeline polls Stack Exchange — the Server Fault Q&A community for sysadmins — every few minutes for new records.
Each new item eases up into its slot at the bottom of the list as it arrives.
A header shows a live/connecting indicator and the last update time.
No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.
About Server Fault
Server Fault is the Stack Exchange question-and-answer site for system administration, launched in 2009 as a sibling of Stack Overflow. It is aimed at people who manage or maintain computers in a professional capacity, rather than those writing application code. Typical threads cover DNS, firewalls, Linux and Windows server administration, backups, virtualisation and mail servers.
Each question carries a score, which is the net of upvotes and downvotes, and an answer count; both appear in the data this saver reads. High scores usually mean a question was clear, widely applicable and answered well, not that it was new. Some of the most-voted questions on the site are years old and keep collecting votes, so a list ranked by votes can surface long-lived classics beside newer questions.
Answers are community-written and ranked by votes, so the accepted answer is not guaranteed to be right for your environment, and advice about older software versions can be out of date. Super User, launched the same year, is the sister site for general computer questions from enthusiasts and power users.
