What a tag count means on Stack Overflow

Stack Overflow, part of the Stack Exchange network, lets each question carry up to five tags that say what it is about, such as a language, framework or tool. This board ranks tags by the number of questions that carry them, as reported by the Stack Exchange API. Tag names are lowercase, and multi-word tags use hyphens rather than spaces, so a tag like visual-studio is one tag, not two.

Because the count is cumulative over the site's whole history, it measures how much a technology has been asked about, not what is used today. A tag from the early years can hold a large total long after developers moved on, while a rapidly growing newer one can trail far behind. Broad tags such as arrays or string appear high because they attach to questions written in many languages.

The tally is also shaped by how questions get tagged. Since a question can have several tags, one question counts toward every tag it carries, so the totals across tags add up to more than the number of questions. Counts reflect asking habits and tagging choices as well as how many people use a technology.

A worked example

A real entry's most recent reported question count is ranked against the real others, with bars easing into place as the board loads.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this real data?
Yes — real Stack Overflow tag popularity figures from Stack Exchange's own public API.
Is a key needed?
No. This is a fully key-less public API.
How often does it update?
The pipeline re-reads the dataset periodically, on whatever schedule it changes.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Does a bigger count mean a more popular language?
Only partly. It reflects how many questions were asked, which depends on age, how often people need help and how questions are tagged, not just how many people use the technology.
Why do generic tags like arrays rank so high?
They apply to questions in many languages at once, so their totals combine several communities.
