How the NSF Grant Awards screensaver works
The background pipeline polls the National Science Foundation's own Awards API — the US federal agency funding basic research — every few minutes for new records.
Each new item eases up into its slot at the bottom of the list as it arrives.
A header shows a live/connecting indicator and the last update time.
No key is required for this key-less public endpoint.
What an NSF award record says
The National Science Foundation is an independent US federal agency, established by Congress in 1950, that funds basic research in all fields of fundamental science and engineering except the medical sciences, along with education and training. Its main tool is the competitive grant, awarded to universities, non-profits, companies and other institutions, and it also supports shared infrastructure such as telescopes and supercomputers.
Each entry shows an award title, the organisation that holds it, a dollar amount and a date. Titles often reveal the programme behind them, such as EPSCoR, the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, which aims to build research capacity in states that have historically received less federal research funding, or education and training schemes alongside lab research. For multi-year projects the amount shown can be well below the eventual total, since awards may be funded in instalments and amended later.
The date is when the award was recorded, not when work starts or ends. A single big number does not tell you how many people it supports, and a small award can come from a short, exploratory programme. Read the figure as a record of money committed to a project, not as a verdict on its value.
