How the Registered In Norway Today screensaver works

The saver reads Brønnøysundregistrene, Norway's open business register.

No account and no key: the request goes straight from your browser, or from this site's own refreshed copy of the feed where the source does not allow browser access.

Values are drawn on a canvas that resizes with the window, so it works on a laptop or a wall display.

If the source is unreachable the saver says so on screen rather than showing stale numbers as though they were current.

Brønnøysund and Norway's open business register

The Brønnøysund Register Centre is a government agency named after the town of Brønnøysund in Nordland, northern Norway, where it is located. It runs a number of national registers, among them the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities and the Register of Business Enterprises. Entities in the coordinating register are identified by a nine-digit organisation number, and the register offers open data about them.

The organisation number carries no meaning about the entity: it does not encode legal form, ownership or address, and its ninth digit is a check digit computed so that typing errors can be caught. Organisation forms are a quick way to understand the entries. ENK is a sole proprietorship, AS is a private limited company, and NUF is a Norwegian-registered branch of a foreign company. Others cover associations, cooperatives and public bodies.

The industry code follows the European NACE system, which gives a rough sense of what the entity does, though a code is chosen by the registrant and may be broad or out of date. A registration shows that an entity has been entered in the register; it does not show that it is trading, solvent or reputable. Some entries are holding companies or dormant entities, and a registration date reflects the filing, not when activity began.

A worked example

Each row names a company, its legal form spelled out, and the town it is registered in, with the form code and registration date on the right. ENK is a sole proprietorship, AS a limited company, NUF the Norwegian branch of a foreign firm. It is one of the most direct readouts of economic activity available anywhere for free: not a survey or an index, just the actual list.

Frequently asked questions

What do ENK, AS and NUF mean?
ENK is enkeltpersonforetak, a sole proprietorship. AS is aksjeselskap, the standard limited company. NUF is a Norwegian-registered branch of a company incorporated abroad.
Why are there so many sole proprietorships?
Because registering one in Norway is cheap and fast, so freelancers and small traders use them heavily. Limited companies require share capital and appear far less often.
Is this real data?
Yes. It comes from Brønnøysundregistrene, Norway's open business register. Nothing is invented or simulated, and if the source cannot be reached the saver reports that instead of drawing something plausible.
Does it cost anything or need an account?
No. Every screensaver here is free, runs in the browser and needs no sign-up. This one uses a public API that requires no key.
Is the register's information public?
The Brønnøysund Register Centre offers open data from the Central Coordinating Register for Legal Entities, but not everything held about people or entities is open, so what the saver shows is limited to public basics.
What is a NACE code?
It is the European standard for classifying economic activities, with codes from broad sectors to detailed activities, used to describe what an entity mainly does.
Does a new registration mean a new business started?
Not always. Entities can be created as holding vehicles, for a particular project or as a restructuring, without the activity being new.
