How NHL standings points work
NHL standings are ordered by points, not by wins. A team gets two points for a win in any form, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and none for losing in regulation. That single overtime-loss point is why records are written as wins, losses and overtime losses, and why points are not simply double the wins.
Teams play 82 games each, but early in the season the number of games played is small, so the table is a snapshot rather than a prediction. When teams are level on points, the first tiebreaker is fewer games played, then more regulation wins, then more wins in regulation and overtime (excluding shootouts), then total wins, with head-to-head points and goal differential after that. A club that wins in sixty minutes is therefore ranked a little above one that needs extra time.
The league has 32 teams in two conferences, each split into divisions. Sixteen teams qualify for the playoffs, eight per conference: the top three in each division plus two wild cards. This saver shows the league table by points, which is not the same as the playoff bracket. Outside the regular season it displays the last final table.
