How the Music Charts screensaver works

The saver fetches Apple's official public top-songs chart for your chosen region, with no key required.

Each track scrolls through in rank order with its title and artist.

The full chart refreshes daily, matching how often the real chart itself updates.

Choose from a handful of regional charts.

How Apple's regional charts work

Apple publishes lists of its most popular songs for each storefront, the country-specific version of its music service. Its Marketing Tools feed generator lets you pick a media type, a storefront, a chart and a result limit of 10, 25 or 50, and returns the list as JSON or XML. The saver uses such a feed to show the current top tracks for a region, with each song’s title and artist.

Because each list is tied to one storefront, the same chart can look quite different from one country to another. Catalogue differences matter too: a song that is not available in a storefront cannot appear in its chart. The ranking is Apple’s own, so it should be read as a measure of popularity within Apple’s service, not of music listening overall, and it says nothing about radio or other platforms.

Charts of this kind tend to favour recent releases and tracks boosted by social media, television or film, which can lift an older song back into the top ranks. The list is refreshed daily, so a track that tops it today may not be there for long. Titles and artist credits are printed as Apple supplies them, including featured artists and remix labels.

A worked example

Set it to United States and the current real #1 song leads the scroll — the same official ranking Apple publishes, not a curated playlist.

Settings & tips

Frequently asked questions

Is this Billboard or Spotify?
No — it's Apple's own official public top-songs chart, a distinct but widely followed real chart.
Is a key needed?
No. Apple's public charts feed is free and key-less.
How often does the chart change?
Daily, matching Apple's own real update cadence.
Is it free?
Yes — free, no download, in your browser.
Why do the regions have different songs?
Each regional chart belongs to a different Apple storefront, and local tastes, language and releases differ, as does which songs are available.
Does the chart include other streaming services?
It is Apple’s own chart for its own service, so it should not be read as a count of listening on other platforms.
Can an old song reach the top?
It can happen with charts in general. A film, television use or viral trend can send an older track back up a chart.
