Reading baseball standings
Major League Baseball has 30 teams split into the American and National Leagues, 15 each, and each league into East, Central and West divisions. The board draws on MLB’s StatsAPI, and it lists each team’s wins, losses, winning percentage and games behind.
Winning percentage is wins divided by games played. Games back is the leader’s win-loss margin minus the trailing team’s win-loss margin, divided by two, which is why you will see half-games such as 2.5. A regular season is 162 games per team, so early-season standings swing widely and tell little until a few weeks have passed.
The postseason field since 2022 takes six teams from each league: three division winners and three wild-card teams. A team can therefore be out of its division race yet still in a playoff position, and the board does not mark those cut-offs. Because teams can have played different numbers of games at any moment, the percentage ordering and the games-back figure can briefly disagree.
