How the MLB schedule data is organised

Major League Baseball has 30 clubs, split between the American League and National League, and each team plays a 162-game regular season, 2,430 games across the league. The regular season runs from late March or early April to late September or early October, so there are games almost every day for six months. This saver shows that day's slate from the MLB data feed it reads: who is playing, the score, and each game's status.

A game can be in several states: scheduled, in progress, final, or delayed, suspended or postponed. Doubleheaders put two games between the same teams on one date, and rainouts are often made up that way. A rain delay can pause a game for a long time without ending it, so a status that looks stuck may simply be waiting for weather to clear.

Scores update on a schedule rather than pitch by pitch, so what you see may trail the broadcast by a short time. In the off-season there are no regular games, and spring training and the postseason follow their own calendars; the postseason can run into early November. Start times depend on the time zone used to display them, so a late West Coast game can fall on the next calendar day elsewhere.
